The cycle of phases
The Moon does not make its own light; we see the half lit by the Sun. As the Moon orbits Earth roughly every 29.5 days, the angle between Sun, Earth and Moon changes, so the sunlit portion we can see grows and shrinks. That gives the familiar sequence of eight phases, from the invisible new moon through the bright full moon and back again.
"Waxing" means the lit part is growing; "waning" means it is shrinking. "Gibbous" means more than half lit, "crescent" less than half. Because the cycle is about 29.5 days rather than a whole number, the phases drift steadily through the calendar.

Does the moon affect your sleep?
This is the question people really search for, so here is the honest version. Folklore has always linked the full moon to poor sleep, restlessness and odd behaviour. The science is mixed and the effect, if there is one, is small.
Some studies have reported that around the full moon people take a few minutes longer to fall asleep and sleep around 20 minutes less, even in blacked-out rooms. But other large, well-controlled studies found no consistent link at all once you account for chance and expectation. The most likely explanations for any real effect are extra light on clear nights and simply expecting to sleep badly. Compared with caffeine, alcohol, stress and late screens, the Moon is a minor player.
